Now Hiring: A New Coffee Cup

My mug pictured here in its youth (2009)

Yesterday morning, I put my beloved coffee mug on the back of the toilet while I wrapped up the cord of Zeca’s flat iron. When I turned away, I heard a crash, then a big splash and then I smelled coffee. Somehow, my coffee mug slid off the back of the toilet and shattered and coffee was everywhere. Luisa came running upstairs and said, “Oh no! Your mug!”

I’m a creature of habit in many ways and I’ve been drinking my coffee out of that mug most days for many years. In fact, I remembered that I blogged about it a long time ago and found the post from 2009. So, it’s been at least 9 years, but likely longer.

Today was my first day without my mug and when I came downstairs, Luisa had set out the Camp Warren mug for me. First of all, it’s white and I’m not sure I can drink from a white mug. Secondly, some of the lettering has rubbed off and I know that would drive me crazy. I put that one away and considered my options.

Melisa sent me a new mug for my birthday but it’s big and I drink my coffee slowly, so, it would get cold. But it’s now become one of my favorite mugs for tea. Yay!

I then considered the Peep mug but it was missing. I later found it in Miguel’s room. This mug is a strong candidate. It’s a dark color and similar in size and weight to my old mug. However, all those multi-colored peeps are A LOT in the morning. Time will tell.

I chose my fox mug for today. I love the clean design and, of course, I love foxes. But the fox mug did not perform as expected. It’s smaller than a regular mug and the tail handle is actually hard to hold. Plus, the walls of the mug are thin and the coffee got cold very quickly. So, I had no choice but to fire the fox mug.

Security will escort you out, fox mug.

So, the search continues. I’ve learned not to get too attached to material things but I didn’t realize that I had grown so accustomed to the mug as part of my morning routine. It’s probably a good thing it’s gone. My brain will be forced to forge new neural pathways. Who knows? Maybe I’ll go crazy and use a different mug every day! (Just kidding. I won’t.)
