The Iris Awards

I am thrilled to announce that I am one of this year's Iris Awards nominees in the category of Most Thought-Provoking Content. It is truly an honor to be nominated and to see my name included with these talented women:

Erin Loechner, Design for Mankind
Kristen Howerton, Rage Against the Minivan
A’Driane Nieves, Butterfly Confessions
Elan Morgan, Schmutzie
Glennon Doyle Melton, Momastery
Vikki Reich, Up Popped a Fox

Last weekend, as I sat in my hotel room in Dayton, I had time to reflect on my path and my good fortune. I thought about my first post in February 2006 which included this very special poem, Ode to a Baby Carrot:

Your're little and orange and tasty to boot.
Why am I troubled that you are so cute?
I am guilty and ashamed that you're all alone-
Taken from your mother, stripped from your home
Yet I sit here and gnaw and chew you to bits
Being a carrot is really the pits.

Reading that, no one would have ever predicted that I would someday be nominated for anything, let alone for Most Thought-Provoking Content, yet here we are.

As someone who often writes about LGBT issues and my life as a queer parent, I have never had a large mainstream audience and that makes this nomination mean even more to me.

I mentioned earlier this week that blogging changed the way I saw myself. Blogging also brought some of the most incredible people into my life and I am thrilled to see so many of them nominated as well.

Thanks to all of you who take the time to read what I write. Thanks to those who nominated me and congratulations to all the nominees!
